Every company using electricity (the vast majority of businesses in the UK) should regularly have an Electrical Inspection Condition Report (EICR). This testing process is voluntary, except for residential landlords, in which case the test is a legal requirement.

It may not be mandatory for business owners to have an EICR inspection, but they have a legal responsibility to ensure employees and customers are safe when working in or visiting their premises.

Electrical equipment which is faulty and, therefore, not working can prove dangerous. It can result in whoever touches it getting a shock. It’s also a fire hazard, considering that roughly 18 per cent of house fires in England result from faulty wiring and cabling.

An electrical installation is an item which is connected to the electricity meter. The test will look at the fuse box or distribution boards. Here you’ll find fuses circuit breakers. There may even be residual current devices (RCDs). Another area to check is the cables in the walls and ceilings and light fittings, switches and sockets.
